Affordable housing complex on the river
team: architect Anna Kolesnikova
category: architectural concept
location: Berlin, Germany
The challenge of designing affordable housing in Berlin explores the potential of the river Spree. The river length and the movability were taken into consideration as the advantages. The first one enables the expansion of the complex in time, depending on the number of tenants, and the second one comes in handy to relocate affordable housing from place to place. The complex is assembled from standard-size units made of CLT panels situated on a pontoon basis. Ramps are used to provide connections between levels. There are three types of units - kitchen, bedroom, and child’s bedroom, whose facades were inspired by the typical façade details of Berlin apartment buildings. The overall volume is formed as a constructor of three types of units (kitchens, bedrooms, and child’s bedrooms), which are placed to create studios, 1-2-3-bedroom apartments with open terraces and the pier. It can stretch along the river and compact, if necessary, filling the free space occupied by terraces.
